Onwards to a Sustainable Singapore: A Comprehensive Guide in Transitioning Your Existing Lights to LED

In line with Singapore’s goal to move towards becoming a green and sustainable society, our government has started making strategies to gradually phase out all energy-inefficient lights such as fluorescent lamps and halogen bulbs come 2023. According to a statement released by the National Environment Agency in October 2018, this action is projected to save about $3.5 million in energy costs islandwide every year.

Imagine how much more we can save if we start taking part in this initiative as early as now. As responsible Singaporean citizens, the least we could do is to switch to LED lighting and consequently enjoy cost savings from monthly electricity bills.

Many of us are still concerned with its purported costs and inconveniences, but in reality, transitioning to LED is simple, practical, and efficient.

How Do LED Lights Work?

Unlike traditional lighting, LED lights are made out of semi-conductive materials that require less time to warm up and cool down. The small LED diodes allow electricity to flow in only a single direction, directly converting electric current to visible light. Because of this, less energy is consumed and only a small amount of it is converted into excess heat.

Conversely, an incandescent bulb lights up when its filament is heated to a high temperature by the electric current that passes through it. During this process, less than 5% of the electricity applied to the filament is actually converted to light while the remaining percentage is wasted as it turns to excess heat.

Making The Brighter Switch

The best thing about LEDs is you can use them without having to tear down your existing light fixtures. You simply replace your screw-in incandescent bulbs with screw-in LED bulbs.

All light fixtures have a rating for the particular size bulb (based on the wattage) to use within the fixture.

As long as the mounting base (socket) is the same size and type, you can replace with a LED bulb in an existing fixture. If the mounting base is not the same size and type, the LED bulb will not fit the socket. There are plenty of materials and Youtube videos available online on how to convert your fluorescent to LED lights and essentially observe these rules:

  • Socket: Ensure that the new replacement LED unit has the same lamp holder (eg. G9, GU10, E14, E27 etc) in order to fit into the existing lighting fixture.
  • Downlights: Measure the cut-out diameter hole size of your existing fluorescent downlights to match with the new LED panels. They are typically 4.5” or 6” inches wide for household (HDB) use or you may negotiate with your contractor to patch back any gap or hole after installation.
  • Panels: Remove all electrical components such as the fluorescent tube metal clip, ballast and starter completely stripped away to make way for the new magnetic LED panel. Simply connect the new LED panel wiring to the same lighting point.

Pro-tip: You should never use a bulb with a higher wattage than what is recommended for the fixture.

LED lights may appear pricier than other types of lighting, but are getting more affordable due to its recent surge in demand and popularity. The savings you obtain will significantly exceed its initial costs in the long run. In fact, they are 25-80% more energy-efficient and cost-effective than traditional lights.

Additionally, its lifespan is much longer and it does not expose you from hazardous materials, such as mercury and phospor that are contained in fluorescent bulbs, upon disposal.
